Iran has formally urged the United Nations to take immediate action over recent joint US-Israeli military strikes targeting Iranian cities.

In a strongly worded letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Security Council President James Kariuki, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi condemned the attacks as blatant violations of Iran’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Araghchi described the strikes on defence installations and civilian sites as a direct breach of Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the UN Charter.

He emphasised that the Islamic Republic reserves its inherent right to self-defence under Article 51 and will deploy all necessary measures to counter the aggression.

In the letter, Iran declared that all bases, facilities, and assets of hostile forces in the region are now considered legitimate military targets until the attacks cease.

The Foreign Minister held the United States and Israel fully accountable for the consequences of their actions, warning of serious regional and global security implications.

Araghchi called on the Security Council to convene an urgent emergency session to halt the illegal use of force and ensure the aggressors are held accountable.

Copies of the letter have been sent to all UN member states and Araghchi requested it be officially published as a Security Council document.

Highlighting the unprecedented threat posed by these strikes, Araghchi urged all UN members committed to maintaining international peace to strongly condemn the attacks and take immediate collective measures to counter them.

The letter stressed that failure to act would jeopardise regional stability and undermine global security.

This move comes amid escalating tensions following US and Israeli operations in Iran, with Araghchi stressing the critical role of the United Nations, particularly the Security Council, in addressing violations of international peace and security.
