The Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Aminul Islam, has asserted that no external entity should interfere in the trial process of crimes against humanity in Bangladesh, stating there is no legal scope for such intervention.
Speaking to journalists at his office on Sunday, the Chief Prosecutor emphasised that investigations fall strictly under the jurisdiction of the International Crimes Tribunal’s investigation agency. He maintained that the agency must be allowed to carry out its duties without outside influence.
“No organisation, whether it be Amnesty International or any other human rights organisation, should interfere in this matter,” Aminul Islam said.
His remarks came in response to queries regarding the reactions of various human rights bodies, including Amnesty International, following the arrests of journalists Mozammel Babu and Farzana Rupa in connection with the Shapla Chattar case.
Regarding the progress of the Shapla Chattar investigation, the Chief Prosecutor confirmed that the process is ongoing.
He assured that only those found to have direct involvement would be brought to justice, adding, “We will not bring any innocent person to trial for the purpose of unnecessary harassment”.
When questioned about potential investigations into the Awami League as a political party, Islam stated he had no personal or direct knowledge of the matter. He clarified that the responsibility for such information lies with the officials of the investigation agency and that he does not possess any first-hand information regarding any such ongoing inquiry.
