Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir has urged young police officers to develop technical expertise to tackle emerging challenges such as cybercrime, online gambling, phishing and the spread of rumours.
He made the remarks at the closing parade ceremony of the 42nd Cadet Sub-Inspector (SI) batch at Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi, on Thursday.
The IGP said maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety is the “sacred duty” of the police, which must be carried out with honesty, professionalism and impartiality.
He called upon officers to perform their responsibilities without fear, favour or temptation, stressing the importance of fairness in investigations and public services.
Highlighting transparency and accountability as key elements of democratic policing, Md Ali Hossain said police must remain firm against crime while maintaining humane and friendly behaviour towards citizens.
He warned officers to ensure that people seeking police services do not face harassment.
The IGP said cybercrime, online gambling and misinformation have become major challenges for law enforcement.
To address these threats, he advised officers to gain expertise in artificial intelligence (AI), digital forensics and other emerging technologies.
Addressing the newly recruited officers, he said their primary responsibility is to earn public trust and meet people’s expectations through honesty and dedication.
He urged them to stand beside vulnerable people and work for the welfare of the country under the motto, “My Police, My Country; Bangladesh First”.
The IGP said the dignity of the police force must be protected by applying professional knowledge and training in their duties.
A total of 500 cadet SIs, including 19 women, took part in the ceremony. The IGP inspected the parade, received the salute and distributed awards among outstanding trainees in the presence of senior officials from the Police Academy and local administration.
