The government has taken a policy decision to establish four police stations, six investigation centres, and two police lines under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in the Purbachal New Town project area to strengthen law and order.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir formally revealed the information after inaugurating Barkau Police Camp at RAJUK’s Central Mechanical Stack Yard in Purbachal on Wednesday. DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed presided over the event around 9am.
While speaking at the inauguration, IGP Ali Hossain said the Barkau Police Camp marks the formal commencement of police operations in Purbachal, adding that it will play a vital role in developing the project into a planned, safe, and modern city.
He also said three DC offices are being set up, alongside the installation of 41 police boxes across various sectors.
The Home Ministry has already granted administrative approval for the thanas and investigation centres, prioritising security in the residential project.
RAJUK has allocated 29.21 acres of land to Bangladesh Police, with registration completed for 18.63 acres and the rest in progress.
The IGP said plans are underway to bring Purbachal under DMP jurisdiction through an independent division, supervised by an Additional Police Commissioner. A proposal to create about 6,524 personnel positions is also under consideration.
Highlighting the strategic importance, the IGP said the inauguration reflects the government’s vision for Purbachal, expanding Dhaka as a megacity while ensuring citizen facilities and law and order.
He added that initially two police camps will be set up — Barkau in Sector‑1, inaugurated Wednesday, and Poshi Police Camp in the proposed Poshi Thana area, expected to open within two months. Other thanas and investigation centres will follow in phases.
The ceremony was attended by senior police officials, local dignitaries, and representatives from print and electronic media.
