The government has amended the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Act, introducing a new provision that disqualifies individuals formally charged with crimes against humanity from contesting in elections or applying for government jobs.
The decision was announced by Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the chief adviser, at a press briefing held Thursday afternoon at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road in Dhaka.
Shafiqul Alam stated that the amendment was approved earlier in the day during an Advisory Council meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Tejgaon.
According to the press secretary, the International Crimes Tribunal Act, 1973 has been amended through an ordinance, introducing a new provision Section 20(c).
Under this newly added provision, if any individual is formally charged under Section 9(1) of the ICT Act, they will be disqualified from being elected to or holding office as a Member of Parliament.
Similarly, will be ineligible from being elected to or holding any post in local government bodies, including that of commissioner, chairman, mayor, or administrator.
Furthermore, they will be barred from being appointed to any government job.
