Huawei flags AI, grid-forming push in renewables

Huawei Digital Power has unveiled 10 global trends for smart photovoltaic and energy storage systems in 2026, signalling a shift towards grid-forming technologies and artificial intelligence to stabilise renewable-heavy power systems, the company said in a press release on Tuesday.

The “Top 10 Trends of Smart PV and ESS 2026” were launched at an event themed “All-Scenario Grid-Forming, Unleashing AI, and Forging Excellence Advance Renewables as Main Energy Sources.”

Huawei Digital Power Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Smart PV and ESS Product Line Eric Zhong presented the trends and a supporting white paper outlining application and technology pathways for accelerating photovoltaic, wind and energy storage systems as primary energy sources.

Zhong said renewable capacity has expanded rapidly over the past decade, but higher penetration is creating new challenges in system balance and grid stability across generation, transmission and consumption.

The trends identify four application-driven shifts and six technology-focused innovations aimed at integrating photovoltaic, wind and energy storage systems.

Huawei expects photovoltaic, wind and energy storage synergy to make renewables more predictable and controllable, while grid-forming energy storage systems will become critical for grid stability and balance.

It said generation-grid-load-storage coordination will support regional autonomy and global power supply coordination, and residential photovoltaic plus energy storage systems will move from AI-enabled to AI-native platforms.

On the technology side, Huawei projects higher frequency and density designs to raise device power density, and higher voltage systems to cut levelised cost of energy.

It also highlighted the need for system-level battery management for safe operations, the maturation of grid-forming technologies, AI agents for renewable plant automation, and quantified safety standards across the energy storage industry.

Huawei said all-scenario grid-forming and AI integration will guide future renewable system development and industry collaboration.

Huawei operates in Bangladesh for more than 27 years, supporting telecom networks, cloud services, digital power solutions and ICT infrastructure, according to the release.
