The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) suspects that the recent fire at the cargo village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka originated from the import courier section.
CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Md Mostafa Mahmood Siddiq shared the information during a press briefing at the CAAB headquarters on Tuesday.
“It appears that the fire started from the courier section, although this has not been confirmed yet. Several agencies are investigating the incident, and the exact cause will be determined once their reports are finalized,” he said.
He further noted that the presence of chemicals in the cargo village may have caused the flames to spread rapidly.
Regarding flight operations, the CAAB chief said 15 flights were rerouted following the fire. “All passengers stranded during the suspension were flown to their scheduled destinations by 4pm the next day,” he added.
The fire broke out at around 2:15pm on 18 October at the cargo village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The swift and coordinated efforts of the Fire Service and airport authorities brought the blaze under control after nearly seven hours and fully extinguished 27 hours later.
Flight operations were temporarily halted and resumed after 9pm on the same day. No casualties were reported in the incident.
