BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has urged all sides to respect the issues on which political consensus has been reached, saying that unresolved matters should ultimately be decided by the people.
Speaking at a seminar held at the Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka on Saturday, Amir Khosru cautioned that repeated street demonstrations by major political parties could lead to confrontations, and called on all stakeholders to remain vigilant and responsible.
“After extensive discussions, we have reached consensus on certain issues, and those must be honoured,” he said. “Dialogue should now focus on how to implement these agreed points. The matters where consensus has not been achieved will be decided by the people.”
He also alleged that a few political parties are trying to determine the fate of the people unilaterally.
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, who was also present at the event, reiterated that the national election will be held in February. He said if political parties fail to take a position on the July Charter, it will be the government’s responsibility to make the necessary decisions.
Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad, speaking at the same event, said no formal agreement was signed regarding the implementation of the July Charter. “The government’s unilateral move to enforce the charter has created tension,” he added.
