A two-kilogram Hilsa caught in the Meghna River in Bhola was sold for Tk9,800 at an auction on Thursday.
The fish, described by traders as a “King Hilsa”, was caught during a morning fishing expedition by a group of fishermen led by Tachir Majhi.
The Hilsa was later brought to the warehouse of wholesaler Zakir Hossain at the Shibpur Bhola Khal fish ghat in Bhola Sadar upazila for auction.
Trader Heju Bepari purchased the fish for Tk9,800 after placing the highest bid in the afternoon auction.
Wholesaler Zakir Hossain said the Hilsa was caught earlier in the morning from the Meghna River by fishermen on Tachir Majhi’s trawler.
Bhola District Fisheries Officer Iqbal Hossain said fishermen are now catching larger Hilsa due to the success of government conservation drives and anti-illegal fishing campaigns.
If rainfall increases further, even bigger Hilsa are likely to be caught in the river in the coming days, he added.
