Content creator and former election candidate Ashraful Alom, popularly known as Hero Alom, has announced that he will contest the upcoming by-election in Thakurgaon-1 as an independent candidate.
The announcement comes amid reports that former BNP secretary general and LGRD minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been nominated by the BNP as its candidate for the presidency.
If he secures the nomination, Fakhrul will have to resign from his ministerial and party positions, while his Thakurgaon-1 (Thakurgaon Sadar) parliamentary seat will become vacant.
A by-election will then be held for the constituency.
Speaking to Jago News, Hero Alom said he had previously announced his intention to contest from a constituency in Satkhira but changed his plans after learning that Fakhrul’s seat could become vacant.
“You know I announced some time ago that I would contest from a constituency in Satkhira. At the time, I did not know that Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s seat would become vacant. If I had known, I would not have chosen Satkhira,” he said.
He said people from his home area had encouraged him to remain in northern Bangladesh, as he is from Bogura.
“With that in mind, I will contest the Thakurgaon-1 seat of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir,” Hero Alom added.
He also confirmed that he would not contest on behalf of any political party and would run as an independent candidate.
However, the by-election schedule has not yet been announced, and the formal processes, including nomination submission and scrutiny, are yet to take place.
Hero Alom’s candidacy will therefore only be finalised after the Election Commission completes the required procedures.
