A 17‑kilometre traffic jam stretched along the Jamuna Bridge-Dhaka–Tangail highway on Saturday, triggered by heavy vehicle pressure and multiple breakdowns.
Jamuna Bridge site officer Executive Engineer Syed Riaz Uddin said the congestion was caused by excess traffic and breakdowns on the bridge and approach roads.
Vehicles are crossing through 18 booths, nine on each side including two for motorcycles. He expected movement to ease as the day progressed.
According to the bridge authority, 40,580 vehicles crossed in the 24 hours from Thursday midnight to Friday midnight, generating Tk3,14,27,250 in tolls.
Of these, 15,448 north‑bound vehicles yielded Tk1,35,58,800, while 25,132 Dhaka‑bound vehicles brought in Tk1,78,68,450.
