A hearing at the International Crimes Tribunal, concerning army officers accused of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and crimes against humanity, is scheduled for Sunday.
Sources indicate that the army officers accused in this case may be produced before the tribunal. The hearing will take place in International Crimes Tribunal-1, a three-member panel headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder.
The other two members of the tribunal are Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and retired District and Sessions Judge Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
One case was filed naming deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 16 others as accused, on allegations of detention and torture in secret cells of the Rapid Action Battalion’s (RAB) Task Force for Interrogation (TFI).
Another case on allegations of enforced disappearances in Joint Interrogation Cell (JIC) facilities names Hasina and 12 others as accused.
The accused include five former director generals of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI). They are Lt Gen (retd) Md Akbar Hossain, Lt Gen (retd) Md Saiful Alam, Lt Gen (retd) Ahmed Tabrez Shams Chowdhury, Maj Gen (retd) Md Saiful Abedin, and Maj Gen (retd) Hamidul Haque.
Previously, on 22 October, a special court remanded in custody 15 high-ranking army officers on charges of crimes against humanity committed during the 15-year tenure of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-1) sent them to a recently established sub-jail inside the Dhaka cantonment following their surrender to the court. The tribunal, headed by its Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, passed the order after a short hearing.
That day, the next hearing concerning the former and current military officers was scheduled for 20 November. Following a prosecution plea on 26 October, the hearing date was rescheduled to 23 November.
