Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain has said both the ministry and the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) are separately investigating the deaths of six infants at Ad‑Din Medical College Hospital in Dhaka’s Moghbazar.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Monday, the first working day after Eid-ul-Adha holidays, he described the incident as “tragic” and said the government is treating it with utmost seriousness.
He noted that alongside the ministry’s probe committee, the DGHS is also conducting its own inquiry. Statements from the mothers of the deceased newborns and all relevant evidence will be reviewed.
Although the report was initially due within three days, additional information is being collected to ensure a more reliable and comprehensive account.
However, the minister expressed hope that the report would be submitted by 3 June.
He added he personally visited the hospital after the incident, while the DGHS director general also inspected the site. “Once the investigation is complete, the cause of death will be detailed and necessary action taken,” he added.
Sakhawat further said that legal aspects are being examined, with discussions held with the Attorney General. Steps will follow according to law based on the findings.
On the issue of no autopsy being conducted, the minister said the government had initiated the process but none of the parents consented.
“Efforts were made to persuade them, but as they refused, no autopsy was forced, which could have complicated the situation further,” he explained.
He confirmed that a case has been filed and the matter remains under investigation. Legal measures will be taken once the report is received.
