International media outlets have prominently covered the news of the death sentence for Bangladesh’s ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina for crimes against humanity.
Following the announcement of the verdict on Monday, various international media, including Reuters, The Associated Press, BBC, Al Jazeera, CNN, TRT World, and The Guardian published this news. Indian media outlets also gave significant importance to the news.
Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal in the case concerning crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising.
On Monday, the three-member judicial panel of International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Majumder, delivered this verdict.
Sheikh Hasina was given the death penalty under the second charge of the case. However, for the first charge, she was sentenced to life imprisonment.
In the verdict, the court stated that Sheikh Hasina committed crimes against humanity. Simultaneously, crimes against humanity were proven against Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and Chowdhury Mamun.
Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun had earlier become a state witness. He was given 5 years’ imprisonment – a significantly reduced sentence – for testifying.
The 453-page verdict was read out by the court at around 12:30pm on Monday.
