An accused in a rape and murder case attempted to escape by jumping from the second floor of the court building in Noakhali while still handcuffed. The incident occurred at around 12:15pm on Tuesday. However, he was caught by the police with the help of local residents.
The accused, Shahadat Hossain (30), from Megha village in Chhatkhil’s Badalkot Union, was arrested in 2022 in connection with the rape and murder of a minor. He had been detained at the Noakhali District Jail.
According to police sources, Shahadat was brought to the Noakhali Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 in connection with a scheduled court appearance.
After the hearing, police officers were escorting him back to the detention cell when he suddenly attempted to flee by jumping from the second floor of the court building while still in handcuffs.
However, with the assistance of local residents, police were able to chase and apprehend him.
Court Police Inspector Shahidul Islam confirmed the incident, stating that Shahadat did not suffer serious injuries despite the fall. He added that discussions with senior officials will determine whether any new charges will be filed against the accused.
