A court in Dhaka has granted a five-day remand for interrogation of Md Kabir, a close associate of prime suspect Faisal Karim, in connection with the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order after the investigation officer, Inspector Faisal Ahmed of the Detective Branch’s Motijheel zonal team, sought a seven-day remand, citing Kabir’s key role in the crime and his withholding of crucial information.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Kabir on 15 December from Fatulla, Narayanganj in connection with the shooting of Hadi. Later, he was placed on seven-day in a case filed over an attempted murder of Hadi.
During the hearing, the prosecution highlighted that Kabir owns the motorcycle used in the attack, which was purchased using his national ID. Kabir had also accompanied Faisal to Hadi’s Cultural Centre multiple times. These links, the prosecutor said, suggest Kabir’s significant involvement and knowledge of the murder plot, as well as the identities of other conspirators.
The investigation officer added that while Kabir provided some information during his first seven-day remand in December, he avoided giving full details. Authorities believe further remand is essential to uncover the masterminds behind the attack and gather evidence from Kabir.
According to the case, Hadi, a prospective independent candidate from Dhaka-8, was returning from campaigning in Motijheel on 12 December when assailants on a motorcycle shot him in the head near Box Culvert Road, Purana Paltan. He was initially treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Evercare Hospital, then flown to Singapore by air ambulance on 15 December, where he succumbed to his injuries on 18 December.
Following the shooting, Inquilab Mancha member secretary Abdullah Al Zaber filed an attempted murder case with the Paltan Police Station on 14 December. After Hadi’s death, the case was converted into a murder investigation.
