Three people were killed and at least two others injured after a shooting outside an In‑N‑Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho on Saturday, authorities said.
The city spokesperson Josh Palmer said the number of wounded was expected to rise, though details on the victims were not immediately available, reports NBC News.
Police Chief Matthew Hicks confirmed a suspected shooter was dead, but it was unclear if that individual was included among the three fatalities. “We believe the threat to the community is over,” Hicks told reporters.
“The suspected shooter in this incident is deceased.” He said the suspect’s identity and motive were under investigation.
The shooting was reported around 2:30pm near the In‑N‑Out on Blue Lakes Boulevard North, an area with several major retailers and a movie theater complex.
Hicks said hundreds of potential witnesses would need to be interviewed. “Today has been a very hard day here in Twin Falls,” he added.
A shelter‑in‑place order was lifted later in the day as roads reopened. Palmer said the investigation was continuing.
Nearby businesses closed as a precaution. Chick‑fil‑A announced it would remain shut for the rest of Saturday, while Magic Valley Mall was locked down with people told to stay inside.
The Twin Falls In‑N‑Out, the fourth in Idaho, United States opened on 24 July. “We are heartbroken,” said In‑N‑Out Chief Operating Officer Denny Warnick in a statement.
“Our prayers go out to our Customers, our Associates, and all of their families. We are working with the Twin Falls Police Department to assist in the ongoing investigation.”
