The upcoming coming-of-age film inspired by Green Day has been given a new title, drawing directly from the band’s earlier work.
Originally titled ‘New Year’s Rev’, the project has now been renamed ‘Nimrods’, a nod to Green Day’s 1997 album of the same name, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The film follows three high school friends who go on a road trip after mistakenly believing their band has been booked to open for Green Day on New Year’s Eve. The story is loosely inspired by the band’s early touring experiences around the era of their 1994 breakout album ‘Dookie’.
Directed by ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ actor Mason Thames, the film also stars McKenna Grace, Jenna Fischer and Fred Armisen. Green Day are attached as producers and also appear in the project.
The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, though a release date has yet to be confirmed.
Green Day recently returned to the spotlight with a Super Bowl opening performance at Levi’s Stadium in California, where they played a medley of hits including ‘American Idiot’.
However, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong notably avoided delivering a modified politically charged lyric he has used in recent live shows, drawing mixed reactions online.
