In a significant move aimed at reforming law enforcement accountability, the Advisory Council of the interim government has decided to establish an independent investigation service for the Bangladesh Police.
The decision was made during a meeting held on Thursday at the office of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus in the capital’s Tejgaon area.
Briefing the media at the Foreign Service Academy, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said, “The Advisory Council has decided to set up an independent investigation service for police to ensure inquiries are conducted free from political or external influence.”
In addition to this, the council has instructed the formation of a separate commission within the police force to handle internal complaints against members of the service.
The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs has been tasked with implementing both initiatives “as early as possible.” Advisers Asif Nazrul and Adilur Rahman Khan, along with Khoda Box Chowdhury, special assistant to the Chief Adviser on Home Affairs, will oversee the process.
The press secretary said chief adviser placed strong emphasis on strengthening local government institutions, stating that Union Parishads, Upazila Parishads, Zila Parishads, municipalities, and city corporations must be empowered to raise and manage their own funds with full transparency.
On the health front, the council discussed the ongoing shortage of qualified faculty in medical colleges. As a short-term measure, the government plans to engage retired medical professionals as consultants and mentors to uphold educational standards.
Regarding the safety of Bangladeshi nationals in Nepal, including the national football team, the council was informed that all are safe and under the care of the Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu.
Summarising the meeting, Shafiqul Alam stated, “Every decision taken today will strengthen Bangladesh’s governance, economy, and global standing.”
Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, deputy press secretary to the Chief Adviser, was also present at the briefing.
