The government will take a proactive role to prevent corruption in the construction of flood-protection embankments across the Haor region, said Water Resources Minister Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee on Friday.
He stressed that, unlike in the past, no irregularities or misconduct in embankment projects will be tolerated this time.
The minister made the remarks after inspecting several embankment construction sites in Dharmapasha, Jamalganj, and Tahirpur in Sunamganj district.
“Previous projects were plagued by corruption, but the current elected government is taking strict measures to ensure transparency and accountability,” he said.
“Under the Prime Minister’s directives, all embankment construction is being closely monitored, and we are keeping regular oversight of the Haor areas.”
On river and canal dredging, Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee added that the government is committed to proper maintenance of waterways.
“Dredging work will be carried out using capital dredging, and the government will act as a vigilant guardian in these projects,” he said, highlighting the role of the administration as a “pahardaar,” or watchdog, in overseeing these works.
During his visit, the minister also met with local farmers to hear their concerns and instructed officials from the Water Development Board to ensure that embankment construction is completed efficiently and correctly, providing maximum protection for Haor-area crops and livelihoods.
