Islami Andolan Bangladesh Ameer Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim has alleged that the government is showing bias towards certain political parties.
“There is still no solution regarding the implementation of the July Charter and the proportional representation (PR) system. The July Charter must be implemented quickly. Before the election schedule is announced, a referendum must be held and those responsible for fascism must be brought to justice to ensure accountability for genocide,” he said.
He made the remarks on Saturday afternoon at the party’s regular monthly meeting at its central office in Paltan, Dhaka, according to a press release.
Rezaul Karim said a level playing field means those responsible for conducting the election must remain neutral in mindset and reflect that neutrality in their actions.
He said field-level officials’ attitudes are shaped by the government’s position, and the election-time administration should therefore treat all parties equally, but the government’s activities are disappointing in this regard.
He said holding a meeting in London with a specific party, taking three parties to a United Nations meeting and recently giving special priority to the same parties is creating particular perceptions nationwide, including among field-level officials.
Expressing concern that the level playing field may be undermined, Rezaul Karim said the interim government must act impartially.
He said continuous conspiracies are taking place, including recent fires and religious provocations aimed at destabilising the country.
He said the government must act cautiously, conduct objective investigations and take effective measures.
He reiterated that the implementation method of the July Charter remains unresolved and must be ensured with urgency.
He said a referendum must be held before the election schedule is declared, genocide must be brought to justice and those who supported fascism must face trial.
Party secretary general Yunus Ahmad, joint secretary generals Gazi Ataur Rahman, Muhammad Ashraful Alam and Fazle Bari Masud, assistant secretary general Ahmad Abdul Kayyum, organisational secretary Shah Iftikhar Tariq, Party’s Dawah and Publicity Secretary Sheikh Fazlul Karim Maruf and office secretary Lokman Hossain Jafri were also present.
