The government is set to place the FY2026‑27 national budget in the parliament on Thursday, outlining a Tk938,000 crore financial plan aimed at stabilisation and fiscal reform.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury will present the proposal in the House around 3pm, the first budget of the BNP government since its 12 February election victory.
Treasury sources say the government has fixed an ambitious revenue target of Tk6.95 lakh crore to meet the expenditure.
Of this, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) is tasked with raising of Tk604,000 crore, while Tk25,000 crore is expected from non‑NBR tax streams and Tk66,000 crore from non‑tax revenue.
Debt servicing will absorb a large share of resources, with Tk1.27 lakh crore earmarked for interest payments — Tk1.05 lakh crore for domestic loans and Tk22,500 crore for foreign debt.
The draft estimates a deficit of Tk2.43 lakh crore. To bridge the gap, the government plans to borrow Tk1.09 lakh crore from external sources, Tk1.12 lakh crore from domestic banks, and Tk15,000 crore through national savings certificates.
Analysts caution that the new administration’s key challenge will be curbing inflation and ensuring efficient revenue mobilisation without stalling industrial growth as Bangladesh navigates a complex economic transition.
