Jamaat-e-Islami has called on the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to sit for dialogue amid the ongoing political strife in the country.
Speaking to journalists after an emergency press conference at Al Falah Auditorium in the capital’s Moghbazar on Sunday, Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher added, “There are many kinds of political games being played in the country.
“In such a situation, everyone must sit for discussions to find solutions together.”
Taher alleged that the government, under pressure to implement the July Charter, is “playing the politics of compromise.”
“This is not about compromise. It is about the fate of the nation,” he added.
Taher warned that if the government delayed issuing the referendum order – whether due to pressure or other reasons – it would have to bear responsibility for the consequences. “Under no circumstances should the government, under pressure, hold the election and referendum on the same day,” he added.
He alleged that BNP did not want reforms initially but joined the National Consensus Commission’s meetings under public pressure.
Taher further said if the government failed to implement the July Charter, it could affect the upcoming national election.
“In that case, the responsibility will lie with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and the government. People are hopeful about reforms, and if those expectations are not met, the public will turn against the government,” the Jamaat leader said.
He also urged BNP leaders to prove their allegations of falsehoods against Jamaat-e-Islami.
