He made the remarks on Saturday at a discussion titled “Unity of Youth: Strength of New Bangladesh” organised on the occasion of the first founding anniversary of Jatiyo Juboshakti at the BMA Bhaban auditorium on Topkhana Road in the capital.
Speaking as the chief guest, Nahid Islam discussed several contemporary national issues, the law and order situation and the government’s plans.
He said reforming the country’s governance system and fulfilling public expectations are the government’s main goals. Referring to ongoing political discussions and public suffering, he said the necessity of any mid-term or early election would largely depend on the government’s overall performance and the pace of state reforms.
Concern was also expressed at the event over various crises in the health sector across the country, particularly the spread of infectious diseases among children, while speakers urged the government to ensure emergency medical services.
The speakers also reiterated commitments to creating employment opportunities for young people and taking strict action against irregularities and injustices committed during the previous authoritarian regime.
Paying deep tribute to Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani on Farakka Day, the speakers stressed securing Bangladesh’s fair share of water from international rivers.
They also said Bangladesh would not become a “playground” for any superpower and that the youth were ready to make any sacrifice to protect the country’s sovereignty and borders.
At the same time, the administration was urged to take a strict and accountable role against any provocation or subversive activities by what the speakers described as “fallen authoritarian forces” seeking to destabilise internal security.
National Youth Force President Tariqul Islam chaired the programme, while General Secretary Engineer Farhad Sohail conducted it.
Leaders of the National Citizens Committee and central-level figures from different sectors were also present.
