The government is considering forming a third International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-3) to expedite the trial of killings and crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul said on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters after visiting the International Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka, Nazrul said the government is treating the July–August atrocities with the highest priority, noting that over 1,000 students and civilians were killed and thousands more maimed during the movement.
“We are considering forming ICT-3 once the tin-shed courtroom becomes available. This would help accelerate not only the July–August genocide trials but also other crimes against humanity, including enforced disappearances,” he said.
He noted that the investigation, prosecution, and judicial teams are working “round the clock” with dedication. “We’re getting full support from the Hon’ble Adviser to the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, along with senior officials and secretaries,” he added.
Calling the July massacre trials “indispensable and inevitable,” Nazrul said, “Justice for the horrific crimes committed during the July uprising is essential for national interest, restoration of democracy, rule of law, and protection of human rights. We remain steadfast in our commitment to this cause.”
Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tazul Islam, and Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim, among others, were present during the visit.
Trials of crimes committed during the July–August protests are already in progress. Several cases have entered the formal charge and witness testimony phase, including multiple cases involving former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, with proceedings nearing conclusion.
