The government has taken a massive initiative to resolve the longstanding waterlogging in Bhabadah, which is called the “sorrow of Jashore”.
Meanwhile, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) and the 24th Engineer Construction Brigade of Bangladesh Army to carry out the project. The signing ceremony was held at the BWDB office in Panthapath of Dhaka on Monday.
Bangladesh Army will re-excavate 81.5 kilometres of five rivers to address the waterlogging in Bhabadah region of Jashore at a cost of about Tk 139.98 crore.
Under the project, five rivers will be re-excavated: 35 km of the Harihar River, 20 km of Hari-Teligati River, 18.5 km of Upper Bhadra River, 07 km of Teka River, and 01 km of Sri River.
Following the government directives, the army will implement the project through the “delegated procurement” method.
Alongside river excavation, drainage systems will be improved, dredged soil will be preserved, and embankments will be made usable as roads for local communities. Turfing and tree plantation will also be undertaken to ensure eco-friendly re-excavation.
BWDB Director General Engineer Md Enayet Ullah said that the interim government has taken special initiatives to resolve waterlogging in Bhabadah region. Both the BWDB and the Army will jointly implement, supervise, and monitor the project.
