Govt moves to reclaim encroached canal land in Netrokona

Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal has officially inaugurated a canal re-excavation project in Netrokona Sadar Upazila, aimed at restoring the region’s vital waterways.

The project involves the re-excavation of a seven-kilometre stretch of canal extending from Vor Beel to Ancha Beel, passing through Katakhali Bazar and Shibnagar Burijhuri Atkapara in Amtala Union.

Following the inauguration ceremony on Saturday afternoon, Netrokona-2 Md Anwarul Haque addressed journalists regarding the initiative.

Responding to questions about illegal fish enclosures and structures built on occupied river and canal land, the MP asserted that no form of encroachment would be tolerated during the excavation process.

He further said any government land within river and canal areas currently under illegal occupation would be recovered through the district administration, following the resolution of any legal complexities.

The MP also sought the cooperation of journalists in the effort to reclaim these public resources.

The inauguration event, held at the Shibnagar Primary School field, was presided over by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Khandakar Mushfiqur Rahman. The programme was moderated by Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Asma Binte Rafiq.

The ceremony was attended by several high-ranking officials and political figures, including District Council Chairman Nuruzzaman Nuru, Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Tariqul Islam, various administrative officers, and leaders of the district BNP.
