The vote counting for Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election has been delayed for over 24 hours, creating uncertainty among students and faculty. The delay stemmed from mismanagement, irregularities, and protests from student panels.
On Friday evening (September 12), following pressure from the university community, the government intervened with a directive urging the JU administration to complete the counting and announce results without further delay. By 8:30 PM, vote counting resumed, with 20 additional staff members assigned to expedite the process. The hall council votes were counted first, and the JUCSU vote counting began shortly after.
The election, which began on Thursday, was initially planned to conclude by 5 PM, with results expected by midnight. However, the process was marred by allegations of vote manipulation, leading to a boycott from five panels and three faculty members. The university switched from electronic to manual counting, further slowing the process.
The uncertainty surrounding the results sparked frustration among students, who had to wait longer than anticipated for the outcome. By Friday evening, the university administration, under government guidance, began working to resolve the delays. Election officials expect to announce results by Saturday morning.
The voter turnout stood at 67%, with Vice-Chancellor Professor Kamrul Ahsan visiting the counting site to oversee the process. Despite the challenges, the administration is working to ensure timely results, with government officials receiving hourly updates on the progress.
