The government has given the final approval to the draft of the “July Uprising Memorial Museum Ordinance 2025”, paving the way for the July Uprising Museum to function as an independent national institution dedicated to preserving the legacy of the historic student-people uprising.
The approval was granted during the weekly meeting of the Council of Advisers at the Chief Adviser’s Office (CAO), presided over by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy following the meeting, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul said, “The residence previously occupied by the former fascist prime minister, who is currently facing trial for mass killings and crimes against humanity, has now been officially designated as the July Uprising Memorial Museum. It will operate as a separate museum.”
He emphasised that the museum will not function under the National Museum but will be a fully autonomous institution, acknowledging its historical and emotional importance.
The ordinance also empowers the museum to establish branch museums across the country, allowing wider commemoration of the uprising.
The press briefing was attended by Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder.
