Shubman Gill begins his first ODI series as India’s captain in a rare situation. He will lead a team that includes two of India’s greatest leaders, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Rohit, the outgoing captain, and Kohli, his predecessor, will both be part of the squad. It is a moment of transition where experience and change come together as India start planning for the next ODI World Cup, two years away.
Gill, however, insists nothing has changed in his bond with the senior players. “People might say things outside, but within the team, everything is the same. Our relationship has not changed at all,” the 26-year-old said before the first ODI in Perth.
He added that he often seeks advice from Rohit and Kohli. “I go to them whenever I need help. I ask what they think, how they would handle a situation, or how they read the pitch. I like hearing their thoughts and then making my own decisions based on that.”
Gill said his interactions with the two veterans remain open and easy. “I share a very good relationship with both Virat Bhai and Rohit Bhai. They always guide me whenever I ask for their advice. That’s the real value of their experience.”
Leading the two stars is a special feeling for Gill. “I grew up watching them. Their hunger and drive inspired me. It’s a huge honour to lead such legends. I’m sure there will be moments in this series when I’ll learn from them. If I face a tough situation, I’ll never hesitate to ask for help.”
As he steps into his new role, Gill sees it as a chance to continue India’s ODI legacy. “It’s very exciting. I have big shoes to fill to carry forward what MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma built. I’ve learned so much from them.”
Gill said he has already spoken to Rohit and Kohli about the team’s future. “We’ve had many talks about how to take the team forward and the kind of culture we want. Those experiences will help us as we move ahead.”
