Ghana were denied victory in dramatic fashion as Wales scored a stoppage time equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw in an international friendly on Tuesday.
The result extended Ghana’s winless run to six matches ahead of the World Cup.
Ghana looked set for a much needed victory after substitute Caleb Yirenkyi put them ahead in the second half. The midfielder scored in the 66th minute after Ernest Nuamah made a strong run from the halfway line. Nuamah’s effort struck the post and Yirenkyi was in the right place to turn the rebound into the net from close range.
It was one of the few attacking chances Ghana created in a match largely controlled by Wales.
The hosts enjoyed most of the possession and created the better opportunities but struggled to find a breakthrough. Dan James came closest in the first half. His header from close range was saved by goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi before he struck the crossbar moments later.
Wales continued to press for an equaliser and finally found it deep into added time. Lewis Koumas scored with a diving header in the third minute of stoppage time to rescue a draw for the home side.
The late goal was a setback for Ghana, who were hoping to build confidence before travelling to North America for the World Cup.
Ghana will begin their Group L campaign against Panama in Toronto on June 17.
