George R.R. Martin has once again reassured fans that he is still working on ‘The Winds of Winter’, the long-awaited sixth instalment in his ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series, the novels that inspired Game of Thrones.
Speaking at New York Comic Con over the weekend, Martin addressed ongoing criticism over the book’s decade-long delay. “I know there’s all this controversy about The Winds of Winter and how late it is,” he said, “but I’ve always struggled with deadlines. It’s never something I’m happy about.”
The author also commented on the backlash he receives whenever he announces a new side project. “Every time I mention something that isn’t Winds of Winter, half the internet loses it,” he joked.
“People say, ‘Why is George doing this instead of writing?’ But some of these projects were written years ago; they’ve just now come to light.”
Despite fan frustration, Martin insisted his passion for the story remains undimmed. “I still love The Winds of Winter. I’m working on it and I care deeply about these characters: the Starks, the Lannisters, the Targaryens, all of them.”
The last book in the saga, ‘A Dance with Dragons’, was published in 2011. Since then, fans have eagerly awaited news of The Winds of Winter, with speculation mounting over whether Martin will finish the series himself.
