George Clooney and Amal Clooney have evacuated their home in southeastern France as devastating wildfires continue to spread across several European countries, threatening communities and forcing hundreds of thousands of people to flee, reports People.
The couple, who live in the town of Brignoles in France’s Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region with their nine-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, confirmed their evacuation through a letter addressed to the town’s mayor.
“At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment,” the letter began.
“As we evacuate Brignoles, we want to emphasise two things. First, we hope you and the people of our city are safe, and second, that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we’ll be part of making it whole. We love Brignoles and our friends who live there.”
A representative for George Clooney confirmed the authenticity of the letter.
Wildfires have been raging across parts of France, Spain, Italy and Greece, prompting large-scale evacuations.
According to The Associated Press, the fires in France have spread across an area roughly four times the size of Paris.
CNN reported that around 224,000 people have been evacuated from France’s Gironde region, while another 3,000 residents have left parts of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
In Spain, more than 63,000 people have reportedly been evacuated, while Reuters reported that two firefighters have died battling blazes in Greece.
Although the couple own several properties, including homes in England, Italy and the United States, they have made their French estate their primary residence in recent years.
Speaking to Esquire in 2025, George Clooney explained that he wanted his children to grow up away from the pressures of Hollywood.
“They have a much better life,” he said, adding that life in rural France keeps them away from excessive screen time and the celebrity culture surrounding Los Angeles.
In an earlier interview with The New York Times, Clooney admitted it was ironic that he had returned to farm life after spending his childhood wanting to escape it.
“Now I find myself back in that life. I drive a tractor and all those things. It’s the best chance at a normal life,” he said.
