A case has been filed against Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam and four others over allegations that they assaulted his personal driver and attempted to kill him following a dispute over an alleged relationship and a leaked video.
The case was filed on Wednesday with Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka by the MP’s driver Obaidur Rahman, who accused Gazi Nazrul, Masum Billah, Motassim Billah, Rakibul Hasan and Aminur Rahman of assault and attempted murder.
Police have already arrested Aminur Rahman in connection with the case.
A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent him to jail after he was produced before it.
Investigation officer Sub-Inspector Rakibul Huda of the Detective Branch’s Pallabi Zonal Team sought a court order to keep Aminur in custody until the completion of the investigation.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin granted the request.
No bail petition was filed on behalf of Aminur.
According to the case documents, Obaidur lived at his sister’s residence at Rose Garden Tower in Pallabi’s Kalshi area and worked as the personal driver of Gazi Nazrul Islam.
The complaint said the lawmaker frequently visited the residence due to family ties.
It alleged that an inappropriate relationship developed between the lawmaker and Obaidur’s niece.
After learning about the matter, Obaidur informed his family and requested the MP to stop the relationship.
The complaint claimed that Gazi Nazrul later threatened him with dire consequences.
The case statement further alleged that a group in Moghbazar had obtained videos of the lawmaker and the woman and attempted to blackmail him.
It said Gazi Nazrul suspected that Obaidur had secretly recorded the videos and shared them with the media and the group.
According to the FIR, following the dispute, Obaidur was allegedly attacked on 14 July at the instruction of the lawmaker.
The complaint stated that Aminur Rahman took him to a drawing room on the pretext of a discussion, where the accused allegedly beat him with sticks.
It further alleged that Aminur pushed Obaidur to the floor and tried to strangle him.
The attack reportedly stopped after Obaidur’s mother Tahmina and younger sister Mim began screaming for help, forcing the attackers to leave.
Obaidur was later taken to Kurmitola General Hospital for treatment, according to the case statement.
It also alleged that the accused continued to threaten him after the incident, forcing him to go into hiding due to security concerns.
The court has directed the investigation officer to submit a report by 28 August.
Gazi Nazrul Islam’s response to the allegations was not immediately available.
