The Cabinet Division has issued a gazette notification confirming President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s resignation, while National Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad will discharge presidential duties until a new president is elected.
The notification was issued on Saturday following Shahabuddin’s resignation from the presidency on 24 July.
According to Article 54 of the Constitution, the speaker will discharge the functions of the President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh during the vacancy until a successor is elected.
Signed by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani, the gazette said the order would take immediate effect in accordance with constitutional provisions.
The Cabinet Division also published the notification on its official website, confirming that Shahabuddin’s resignation letter had been accepted and that Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram would perform the responsibilities of the head of state.
