The recent rise in global fuel prices triggered by the conflict in the Middle East will not affect Eid travel in Bangladesh, Commerce, Industries, Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said on Saturday.
“There is also no possibility of a price hike in essential commodities,” said Commerce, Industries, Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir while responding to questions from journalists in Sylhet.
He, however, said a prolonged war could create challenges for the global economy.
The minister made the remarks at an iftar and Eid gift distribution programme organised for working-class families of Ward No 19 at the Raynagar Daftoripara Mosque ground in Sylhet, according to a commerce ministry press release.
Bangladesh supports peace and hopes the war will end soon so that global stability can be restored, he said.
Replying to another question about the government’s preparedness if the conflict continues for a long period, Muktadir said the current government was elected through the direct votes of the people and has taken necessary preparations to ensure public safety and maintain normal life.
“Due to these preparations, there is no reason for people to worry,” he said.
Addressing the programme earlier as chief guest, the minister said the commitments he made to the people before the election would be implemented gradually.
He also said various civic problems in Sylhet city would be resolved in phases and sought the prayers and cooperation of residents to fulfil the responsibility entrusted to him through their votes.
Among others, Sylhet Metropolitan BNP Acting President Rezaul Hasan Qayes Lodi, General Secretary Imdad Hossain Chowdhury and programme organiser Shafiqur Rahman Sumon were present.
Later, the minister attended separate iftar and prayer gatherings organised by Bangladesh Sammilito Peshajibi Parishad, Sunamganj Samity in Sylhet and Sylhet Metropolitan Police.
