Police have arrested four people in connection with the fatal stabbing of a man during a Tajia procession marking Holy Ashura in Old Dhaka.
The victim, Zakir Hossain, 30, was stabbed in the Banglabazar area under Sutrapur Police Station and later died at Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford) Hospital.
Zakir, son of Jahangir Hossain and Falani, was a resident of 39 BC Das Street Lane in Lalbagh.
Sub-Inspector Sohan of the prosecution division of Sutrapur Police Station confirmed the arrests on Saturday, saying the four suspects had been detained in connection with the murder case filed after the incident.
Court sources said the accused were giving confessional statements before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Manjurul Islam. State prosecutor Shamsuddoha Suman also confirmed the development.
According to preliminary findings by several intelligence agencies, the killing stemmed from a previous personal dispute or rivalry between two groups.
Investigators said the incident occurred during a Tajia procession organised by the Bibika Rawza Ashekan Committee. As the procession advanced from Bibika Rawza, an altercation broke out between two groups at the rear of the procession. During the clash, Zakir was allegedly attacked with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured.
He was rushed to Mitford Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police said legal proceedings against the arrested suspects were underway.
