Safura Begum Rumi, former lawmaker from a reserved women’s seat, has been arrested in Mohammadpur, Dhaka.
Detectives arrested Safura Begum, also a member of the Awami League’s executive committee, on Wednesday night during a raid at a house on Tajmahal Road.
Confirming the arrest on Thursday morning, Lalmonirhat DB Officer-in-charge Sad Ahmed said she had been absconding since 5 August 2024. Preparations are underway to produce her before court through due legal process, with further legal action pending.
Police said Safura Begum went into hiding after the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August. Allegations suggest she was planning activities for the banned Awami League under the banner of the Joy Bangla Brigade.
Safura Begum is president of the Lalmonirhat district women’s Awami League and former president of the district bar association.
She faces at least five cases including charges of murder, sabotage, offences under the Speedy Trial Act, and fraud filed with Lalmonirhat Sadar, Rangpur Kotwali, and Dhaka’s Mohammadpur police stations.
Police have already submitted a charge sheet against her in a murder case filed with Rangpur Kotwali Police Station on 31 August last year.
