Police on Friday recovered the body of a former student of Jahangirnagar University (JU) from a residence in the capital’s Uttara area.

The deceased was identified as Sabit Mahmud Shawn, a former student of the 44th batch of the university’s English Department.

SI Ikhlas Mia, the duty officer of Turag Police Station, confirmed the matter to the press. He stated that police reached the scene at approximately 8:30 am on Friday to recover the body after being informed of the incident. While the police initially suspect the death to be a suicide, the exact cause will be confirmed once the autopsy report is available.

Mohammad Kajal Mia, a batchmate from the same department, noted that Shawn had been suffering from mental depression for the past few days.

He further mentioned that Shawn had shared several unusual posts on the social media platform Facebook recently. The news of the suspected suicide reportedly surfaced at approximately 3am.

Police are continuing their investigation to uncover the actual circumstances surrounding the death.
