Former Member of Parliament from the Jamalpur-1 constituency, Nur Mohammad, has been arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Police from the capital’s Gulshan area on Saturday night.
Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch Police Chief Shafiqul Islam confirmed the arrest, saying that Nur Mohammad has been brought in for questioning.
“Information has been found that there are multiple cases against him in Bakshiganj, Jamalpur. It is being investigated whether there are any other cases,” he said.
Earlier, on 1 January, a court had imposed a travel ban on Nur Mohammad and BIWTC Chairman Md Salim Ullah, along with four others, on charges of various irregularities and corruption. The others banned were Nur Mohammad’s wife, Rowshan Ara Begum, and his nephew, Md Saiful Islam.
Nur Mohammad was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Jamalpur-1 constituency in the 12th National Parliament election under Awami League’s “boat” symbol. Earlier, he had contested in the 2008 9th National Parliament election as an independent candidate and was defeated.
Police said investigation into the cases against him is ongoing. Further legal action will be taken based on the findings.
