Former Bangladesh international footballer Golam Dastagir Nira died on Saturday night after suffering a heart attack. He was 61. His sudden passing has cast a pall over the country’s football community.
Nira was widely regarded as one of the game’s most courteous and approachable figures. Known for his ever-present smile, he built lasting relationships across the sport, from players and coaches to journalists. Friends recall how he made a habit of personally sending birthday wishes, a small gesture that reflected his generous character.
A native of Khulna, Nira enjoyed a prominent playing career with two of Bangladesh’s most popular clubs, Abahani Limited and Brothers Union. At international level, he was a dependable defender for the national team, representing Bangladesh in several competitions, including the President’s Gold Cup.
Following his retirement from playing, Nira transitioned into coaching and spent several seasons in the Premier League with Muktijoddha Sangsad KC. In recent years, he had stepped away from the spotlight, returning to Khulna to work at grassroots level and contribute to football development in his home district.
Tributes have poured in since news of his death broke. The Bangladesh Football Federation, along with clubs, former teammates and officials, has expressed deep sorrow at the loss of a man remembered as much for his humanity as for his footballing career.
Nira is survived by his family. Details of his funeral will be announced in due course.
