Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam on Sunday said a formal investigation into the allegations of crimes against humanity against the Awami League will begin soon.
Speaking to reporters on the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) premises in Dhaka, he said his office has received allegations of crimes against humanity against Awami League as an organisation.
“We are currently in the process of verification, and a formal investigation will commence shortly,” he stated.
According to the chief prosecutor, the investigation is being initiated based on a complaint filed by a political party, Nationalist Democratic Movement.
“Preliminary inquiries are underway, and significant progress is expected within this month,” Tajul said, adding that several trials are going on and some are nearing completion.
“A number of major developments are expected soon, including submission of charge sheets in several key cases,” he noted.
Meanwhile, the ICT-2 is set to take cognisance of three allegations against four individuals, including AL leader Mahbubul Alam Hanif. They are accused of committing multiple crimes against humanity, including the killing of six people in Kushtia.
Eight accused in the cases filed over other crimes against humanity were produced before the tribunal.
