At least 11 people were killed in separate incidents of lightning strikes across six districts on Sunday as sudden thundershowers accompanied the monsoon rains. The fatalities occurred between noon and evening in Narsingdi, Savar, Manikganj, Jamalpur, Netrokona, and Kishoreganj.
Three students die in Narsingdi
In Narsingdi’s Monohardi upazila, three madrasa students were killed while performing ablution (wudu) before the Maghrib prayer at Panchkandi Madinatul Ulum Madrasa. The deceased were identified as Zahirul Huq (15), Abu Raihan (14), and Abu Jafar (15), all of whom hailed from Hossainpur in Kishoreganj.
Monohardi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jahangir Badsha stated that the students were rescued and taken to Shibpur Upazila Health Complex, where three were declared dead. A fourth student was injured and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Fatality in Savar
Three people, including a landowner and two day-labourers, died while working in a field in Konda village of Savar’s Bhangaon union at around 5:00 pm. The landowner was identified as Deen Islam (54), a resident of Baliyarpur Pachani Para. One labourer was identified as Dulal (60), while the identity of the other remains unknown.
Savar Bhannipur Police Outpost In-charge Imran Hossain confirmed that the two labourers died on the spot, while Deen Islam succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.
Two farmers killed in Manikganj
In Manikganj’s Singair upazila, lightning strikes killed two farmers, Kabir Hossain (30) and Shahidul Islam (25), while they were working in a field in Kanchan Nagar village. They were rushed to a clinic in Savar’s Hemayetpur, where duty doctors pronounced them dead. Singair Police Station OC Mazharul Islam confirmed the incident and urged the public to remain cautious during stormy weather.
Elderly farmer dies in Jamalpur
In Jamalpur’s Madarganj upazila, an elderly farmer named Musa Fakir (60) was killed while cutting grass for his cattle in the North Charbaola area of Balijuri union at approximately 4:30 pm. He was declared dead upon arrival at the Madarganj Upazila Health Complex.
Death in Netrokona
In Barhatta upazila of Netrokona, Jahangir Alam (32) was killed at noon while returning home with his cattle from a field in Borgaon village. Barhatta Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Selina Akter confirmed the death and expressed her condolences.
Boatman killed in Kishoreganj
A boatman identified as Babul Sarkar (45) died when lightning struck a moving boat in Ulabaira Char Haor in Nikli upazila. Babul, a resident of Mohanganj in Netrokona, was returning from Ashuganj after selling paddy. Nikli UNO Rehana Majumder Mukti confirmed that while others on the boat sought shelter under the deck during the rain, Babul remained at the helm and was killed instantly.
The sudden loss of lives has cast a shadow of grief over the affected regions. Local administrations have advised residents to remain indoors or seek safe shelter during inclement weather.
