A fishing cat was killed after being struck by a passenger bus while crossing the road in Gangni upazila of Meherpur.

The incident took place on Saturday morning at Chengara, along the Gangni-Meherpur regional road.

According to local witnesses, the fishing cat killed by speeding bus in Meherpur was hit by a fast-moving passenger bus as it attempted to cross the road, resulting in its immediate death.

The bus fled the scene following the accident, and local residents later removed the body from the roadside.

Forest Department officials arrived after being notified.

The cat’s body was buried after the necessary legal procedures were completed.

Hamin Hossain, the acting forest officer of Meherpur, confirmed that the fishing cat was an adult and noted that the area is known as a wildlife corridor. He urged motorists to exercise increased caution while driving through the area.

Enamul Azim, former professor of Geography and Environmental Science at Meherpur Gangni Degree College, emphasised that such incidents could become more frequent unless effective measures, such as speed control and warning signboards, are put in place.
