A bustling wholesale fish market in Narsingdi is witnessing hourly sales worth crores of taka, with more than Tk4 crore traded within just three to four hours each morning.
The Mosleh Uddin Bhuiyan Market, widely known across the country as MP Market, has emerged as a major trading hub where fish sales peak between 4am and 7am to 8am.
Traders said a wide variety of fish are sold at the market, including locally sourced river fish as well as farmed varieties such as ruhi, catla, mrigel, shing, tilapia, pangas, shrimp, pabda, tengra, punti and hilsa, alongside marine fish.
Fish traders and farmers from different districts bring consignments to the market, which has gained popularity nationwide due to transparent transactions and strong security, they added.
Small-scale traders from Narsingdi and neighbouring districts including Kishoreganj, Gazipur, Narayanganj and Brahmanbaria flock to the market to procure fish for retail supply.
From midnight, trucks of varying sizes begin arriving with fish consignments from across the district, while labourers start loading and unloading from around 4am.
Rajshahi-based fish farmer Suruj Mia said, “I have cultivated different species of fish in 10 ponds. I brought nearly two tonnes of ruhi today. The prices here are good, and the transactions are secure.”
Chandpur-based trader Badsha Mia said he had sent hilsa, baila and baim from the Meghna River, adding, “The aratdar (wholesale traders) is selling the fish now. I will leave after the sales and send more fish again.”
Satkhira-based trader Alam Mia said, “I brought shrimp and ruhi, and they have already been sold at good prices.”
Dipti Matsya Arat owner Sujit Das said he was selling pabda, tengra and chapila sourced from local farmers and rivers, adding that sales at his outlet alone reached around Tk20 lakh.
Maayer Ashirbad Arat owner Bhojon Das said demand remained high despite slightly lower supply on the day.
Kripa Fish Traders owner Juton Das said hilsa, ruhi and catla were being sold at his hub, adding that transactions could reach Tk70 lakh to Tk80 lakh.
Aratdar Samity President Haripada Das said daily transactions at the market exceed Tk3 crore, driven by safety and transparent dealings that attract traders from across the country.
He added that the market was originally established by former lawmaker Shamsuddin Ahmed Ishaq in his father’s name and later became widely known as MP Market due to its growing reputation.
