Two unidentified men hurled two crude bombs in front of the Hall Gate of Gopalganj Science and Technology University (GSTU) early Thursday.
According to eyewitnesses, the assailants targeted students sitting at Lipu’s Canteen near the hall gate around 12am.
One crude bomb hit a tree, while the other fell inside the gate and exploded.
No students were injured in the blasts.
The attackers fled the scene on motorcycles before members of the university’s proctorial body arrived.
A security guard deployed at the gate said the miscreants approached from Ghonapara on motorcycles. However, he could not identify them.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s GSTU unit publicity secretary, Nahidur Rahman Sakib, demanded immediate and strict action and said that risks to students’ lives are increasing daily.
Assistant Proctor Ariful Islam said the proctorial team was patrolling the campus ahead of the orientation ceremony for fresh students, which is scheduled to be attended by three local Members of Parliament.
He said the team reached the spot within seven to eight minutes of being informed of the explosion and notified the police.
Police are collecting CCTV footage of the incident. A temporary police camp is also being established in front of the university, alongside overnight police patrols, to strengthen campus security.
