Studiocanal has unveiled the first look at Fred Cavayé’s bold, action-leaning adaptation of Victor Hugo’s ‘Les Misérables’, set to hit cinemas on December 9, 2026. The film stars Vincent Lindon as Jean Valjean and Tahar Rahim as his relentless pursuer, Inspector Javert, promising a tense and visceral reimagining of the classic tale.
Lindon brings his trademark intensity to the role of Valjean, the ex-convict seeking redemption after nearly two decades in prison for a minor crime. Rahim, known for Madame Web and Monsieur Aznavour, plays Javert, whose obsessive pursuit of Valjean drives the story’s moral and emotional tension.
Joining them are Benjamin Lavernhe and Camille Cottin as the scheming Thénardiers, while Noémie Merlant, celebrated for her work in Tàr, portrays the tragic Fantine. Together, the ensemble promises a fresh, grounded approach to the sweeping narrative of revolution, sacrifice and justice.
Cavayé’s adaptation focuses on the raw, human drama at the heart of Hugo’s work. Beyond the iconic characters, the film explores Valjean’s struggle to protect Cosette, the daughter of Fantine, from exploitation and abuse, all against the backdrop of a France simmering with social unrest.
As Valjean navigates love, loyalty, and the demands of justice, the story becomes a tense, action-infused exploration of morality and survival.
Produced by Richard Grandpierre (Eskwad Productions) and Olivier Delbosc (Curiosa Films) in co-production with Studiocanal, TF1 Films Production, Canal+ and Netflix, the project represents one of France’s most ambitious cinematic undertakings in recent years.
