Three people, including a firefighter, sustained burn injuries in a fire that broke out at a tin-shed chemical factory in Amulia Model Town under Demra on Thursday.

The injured are currently undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

The victims are Fire Service member Naim Hossain, 30, and factory workers Md Sujon, 22, and Babu, 23.

They were first taken to a local hospital and later transferred to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the afternoon.

Eyewitness and factory worker Md Sohel said the fire broke out in the morning due to a short circuit in a printing machine at a chemical ink production unit.

He said the blaze spread rapidly as the factory stored chemicals, triggering panic among workers.

Sohel added that workers initially tried to bring the fire under control, but a sudden flare-up engulfed parts of the factory, leaving Sujon and Babu severely burnt.

He said Sujon suffered extensive burns, while Babu sustained comparatively minor injuries.

Fire Service member Naim Hossain was part of a team deployed from Fire Service headquarters after the incident was reported.

He sustained injuries while attempting to extinguish the blaze.

Shaon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the burn institute, said Sujon has suffered burns over nearly 60 percent of his body and remains in critical condition.

He added that firefighter Naim sustained minor burns to his right leg and is under observation, while Babu is receiving primary treatment.
