A fire broke out at the Jamaat-e-Islami office in Rajapur, Jhalakathi, on Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred at Amatla Bazaar in the 7th ward of Sataria Union, Rajapur upazila.
In a press briefing held at the Jamaat office, Kabir Hossain, the Ameer of Rajapur Jamaat-e-Islami, accused opponents of deliberately setting the office on fire out of “electoral revenge.” He called for a fair and impartial investigation into the incident.
However, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rajapur Police Station, Nazrul Islam, stated that initial assessments by the Fire Service and Rural Electrification authorities suggest that the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit.
He added, “It is too early to confirm the exact cause of the fire. However, furniture and important documents inside the office have been destroyed in the blaze.”
The police are investigating whether there are any other causes behind the fire. Legal action is being taken as part of the ongoing investigation, he confirmed.
