A shopkeeper and his elderly father were critically injured after allegedly being hacked by a group of miscreants following a dispute over parking motorcycles near their shop at Amtoli Bazar in Sreepur upazila on Friday.
The victims were identified as Habib Sheikh, 26, the owner of a grocery shop, and his father, Kabir Sheikh, 70. Both are residents of Amtoil village.
According to local residents, the trouble began on Friday afternoon when Hasib Biswas and Raju Biswas, also from the same village, parked two motorcycles near Habib’s grocery shop at Amtoil Bazar.
At around 5pm, Habib arrived to open the shop and asked the two men to move the motorcycles from the shopfront. His request led to a heated altercation between them.
Later, at around 8pm, a group of 20 to 25 people, allegedly armed with locally made weapons and led by Hasib and Raju, launched a sudden attack on Habib’s shop.
The attackers severely hacked Habib and his elderly father, Kabir, leaving them critically injured. They also allegedly vandalised the shop and looted cash and valuables.
Family members and local residents rescued the injured father and son and took them to Sreepur Upazila Health Complex.
As Habib’s condition deteriorated, the attending physician referred him to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Mazharul Islam, Habib’s younger brother, alleged that the attackers looted and vandalised the shop, causing damage estimated at around Tk4 lakh.
Md Oli Mia, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station, said the situation was under control.
“A case has been filed with Sreepur Police Station in connection with the incident,” he said.
